Artist Focus: Bex Glendining

A special treat for all you Von Citizens, an interview with the creator of our exclusive Final Fantasy VII print – which will enjoy a limited run over the holidays.

Hi, I’m Bex Glendining! I’m a freelance illustrator and comic artist/colourist who loves cats, plants and using lots of pink and blue.

Where are you from?

I’m from Kent, in the United Kingdom!

Who are your inspirations? (artistically or otherwise)

I’m constantly inspired by artists online, there’s so much talent, it’s impossible to name just a few.

I’m also inspired by the world around us. What makes a space your own, how does a room reflect the person who lives there? Be it moves, tv shows, video games, magazines, whatever, I try and look at the space used and catalogue what makes it unique.

Favourite thing to draw?

Cosy scenes with soft lighting! I love creating a space and imagining what kind of story it could have and what kind of person would inhabit it.

When and how did you know you wanted to be an artist?

Cliché answer, but I’ve always been an art person, and grew up drawing all the time, so it’s always been there, but I didn’t know I really wanted to be an artist as a career until the last couple of years.

Favourite medium to work with?

I woke the most digitally, but I really enjoy watercolour and sculpting, though I’m still learning.

How has your style changed over the years?

When I first started I only drew traditional portraits, and then moved onto painting digital portraits. When I started practising drawing scenes and backgrounds I stepped away from more painterly styles and experimented with lines and flat colours, which seems to have stuck so far!

What advice would you give young artists starting out?

Experiment with different styles and mediums and draw things you’re not comfortable with (shoes, hands, backgrounds, etc). Try and find joy and have fun in the work you’re doing, and make time for yourself and personal art.

Favourite video game?

Hmm, tough question. I’d have to say the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Syndicate or Origins to be specific. I’m a big fan of Apex Legends, Dragon Age and Mass Effect too.

Most anticipated game?

Probably… Watch Dogs Legion, or Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2!
